Returning to Texas reignited my investigation into who Candle Face truly is. She’s the 11-year-old ghost girl from The Empty Lot Next Door, the haunting presence of my childhood—both in nightmares and daylight—with her melted, disfigured face.
But I wasn’t her only target. For years, Austin residents shared their own frightening encounters, sending letters I had once set aside for future research. Now, with fresh determination, I’ve reopened that file.
Almost immediately, things took a disturbing turn. Two of the three original witnesses I reconnected with have vanished—failing to return calls or emails. The third, once eager to talk, abruptly backed out after a threatening dream from Candle Face herself. He described her warning and decided that silence was safer.
Their stories now hang in silence. If they ever decide to come forward again, I’ll head to Austin without hesitation to document and share their accounts.
For now, my investigation feels stuck in a haunted pause. I’m sifting through scattered leads, stepping cautiously into Candle Face’s story, and hoping I don’t find myself trapped in the same dead ends as those before me.
